Reasons to leave
I’m not really on social media anymore. I am not judging anyoe who is on social media but in my opinion the entire thing is a grift. I personally feel it’s a myth that it helps to sell books or make a name for yourself. I’ve seen Booker Prize winners have absolutely zero social media presence. Zero. Winning the Booker isn’t really a goal of mine but the point is that I don’t believe that you actually need to have social media to have a novel that is well received and loved.
I feel social media steals our time, I feel it makes us less empathetic. It has re-wired the brains of children and as someone who works as a secondary school librarian, I should be setting an example. The fact that social media is free to join means that we are the product, not the customer. Nothing is free. We have given our data and our lives to companies that are the defintion of scum. I am also leaving social media because I want to be more creative and I want to read more books. I think of all the time I’ve wasted looking at bullshit on Instagram and how I’ve really learned nothing other than to get angry at some idiot or politician and I don’t really want to do it anymore.
I think I’ll try to post on here a little bit about the things I’ve been doing. If you want to see the kind of library stuff I’m doing with the youth at Glenthorne High School you can go here https://glenthornelrc.blogspot.com.
